Billy Lids Playland in Hawthorn - Review

published on 08 February 2025

We recently visited Billy Lids Playland in Hawthorn with our 2-year-old daughter on a busy Saturday. Here's our experience at this indoor play centre.

First Impressions

The first thing we noticed was the interesting food choices—not just your typical sausage rolls and chips, but a more diverse menu that stood out compared to other play centres. Secondly, the affordability was impressive: $12.50 for unlimited play, and no charge for adults—a huge plus for families looking for budget-friendly activities.

Play Areas & Features

Billy Lids Playland is divided into five main areas:

  1. Entry & Food Court – A spacious area where parents can sit and enjoy food while keeping an eye on their kids.
  2. Toddler Play Area – Designed for younger children, but our daughter, being an adventurous climber, wasn’t very interested in this space.
  3. 3-5 Year Old Play Area & Ball Pit – The ball pit was a hit! Our daughter loved diving in and playing here.
  4. Bouncy Castle (5+ Years) – We didn’t try this, but it looked like a great option for older kids.
  5. Main Playground – A larger, more challenging structure for older children, featuring climbing spaces, slides, and interactive play elements.

Scattered throughout the premises were several interactive screens and games, adding to the variety of entertainment available.

Our Experience

Since we visited on a Saturday, it was incredibly busy! While our daughter enjoyed the ball pit, she quickly moved on to the main playground, where I decided to follow her. This turned out to be quite the adventure, as she was unsure about playing with the bigger kids. However, she absolutely loved the challenge and excitement.

One thing to note: adults are not permitted in several play areas, making it tricky for parents with younger children who might need more assistance. For this reason, I wouldn’t highly recommend it for kids under 3, unless they are very confident and independent climbers.

Facilities & Amenities

The playland is housed in a heritage music hall, which gives it a slightly aged appearance. The facilities are basic but functional, including:

  • Male and female toilets
  • Disability access
  • Baby change facilities in both restrooms

Final Thoughts

Billy Lids Playland is a fantastic spot for kids aged 3 and up, especially those who love to climb and explore. The affordable pricing, engaging play structures, and variety of activities make it a great weekend destination. While we didn’t try the food or the bouncy castle, our overall experience was positive, despite the weekend crowds.

For toddlers under 3, this venue may not be the best fit due to the limited areas where parents can assist. However, for older kids, it’s a wonderland of fun!

Would we go again? Yes—especially once our daughter is a little older and ready to fully explore all the play areas!
